Regimental Sgt/Majors

The BSA Police originated as a mounted infantry regiment operating under the British South Africa Company’s mandate to police the occupied territory. In its early years, the force appointed Regimental Sergeant Majors who were based primarily at the police training depot, where they oversaw what would evolve into the Training Branch of the Force. These men served as the senior non‑commissioned officers of the BSA Police; among them were Bodle, Blatherwick, Douglas, Tantum, Goodall, Lardent, Gilfillan, Weller, Trangmar, and Pearce, who became the final Depot Chief Inspector. When the organisation transitioned from military to police ranks, the role of Regimental Sergeant Major was absorbed into the position of Depot Chief Inspector, a practice that continued until 31 July 1981.
